ISLE OF MAN LECTURE DELIVERED BY
RENOWNED ECOLOGY PROFESSOR
A celebrated conservationist has delivered the inaugural UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man Lecture
at the Manx Museum.

rofessor Peter Bridgewater presented the lecture
– sponsored by Zurich International – which had
the central theme ‘Don’t ask what your biosphere
can do for you, but rather what you can do for your
biosphere’. Setting the lecture in the context of the recent
Global Assessment on Biodiversity, he explained and
explored how Biospheres can help solve the issues
raised in that assessment, including practical steps
that local communities can take to become involved in
projects. Geoffrey Boot MHK, Minister for the Department of
Environment, Food and Agriculture, said: “It was a
privilege to welcome Peter, a former global director
of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme,
back to the Isle of Man for our inaugural lecture. He
gave an engaging and enjoyable presentation on how
Biospheres promote sustainable development, education
and conservation and how, as a community, we can work
together to maximise the Isle of Man’s Biosphere status
and achieve a more sustainable future.”
